The story behind WSP’s eLearning project
The WSP L&D team faced the daunting task of quickly upgrading their bilingual training modules for 65,000 employees. Upon reviewing their existing eLearning, WSP sought to address three critical items, which included:
- Revising the course components to meet minimum WCAG accessibility standards,
- Updating the courses to align with the new WSP branding and visual guidelines and;
- Improving the eLearning content to be more engaging and interactive.
WSP understood that their internal team needed support to accomplish these goals, so they contacted Neovation, who accepted the project’s challenges head-on.
Neovation’s in-house team of instructional designers and graphic designers became an extension of the WSP team. They worked hand in hand with the WSP team to identify areas for improvement in eLearning using interactivity, implement necessary accessibility standards, and manage course translations of bilingual English and French content while staying within scope and budget.
Key components of the WSP eLearning project
Neovation and the WSP team worked on the project in parallel to reach a successful conclusion. Specifically, the Neovation team assisted with:
- Creating new templates for WSP’s training content, including designing and developing interactive activities such as simulations using the new WSP branding.
- Implementing WCAG 2.0 Standard Accessibility (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), an international web accessibility standard, within the courses. Neovation performed extensive usability testing to ensure that the screen reader and focus order functionality of both languages worked optimally.
- Building learning simulations to help emulate the operational environment, allowing learners to practice tasks in a “no risk” setting.
- Working with WSP across all facets of planning to ensure they were supported throughout the project by adhering to tight timelines and strict budget constraints.
Neovation's extensive work for WSP showcases the breadth of their collaboration. Thanks to the strong partnership between the two companies, Neovation was able to achieve the targeted accessibility standards and stay within the timelines projected.
Project Goals
- Infused a modern look and feel with more engaging interactivity and accessibility features in English and French across 20 different courses, modifying a total of 40 courses!
- Add more interactive elements within the courses to create more learner engagement.
- Make new software training accessible, multilingual, and engaging for existing staff and onboarding employees.
Unique Challenges
WSP initially provided the original material, consisting of twenty courses in English. However, we encountered significant accessibility challenges when translating the English courses into French versions while maintaining the same engagement features and new branding. Neovation’s instructional designers collaborated closely with various levels in the WSP organization, working directly with numerous stakeholders to tackle these challenges and create solutions.
The Final Result
The new eLearning courses, which covered various topics from HR to Finance, were developed in six months. They have robust accessibility features, new engaging interactivity, and freshly updated branding. Since the project wrapped, the updated training has been deployed to over 65,000 employees throughout the US and UK!
The learner response was overwhelmingly positive, with 95% responding favorably to the training in post-training surveys.
“Loved the WBT courses. Simple and straightforward, and pointed me to resources for when I had to do it myself. Well done”.
“I am quite excited to begin using what I've learned in this course!”
WSP is excited to leverage this “leveled up” training across all their divisions worldwide.
This initiative was a huge success! Neovation’s quick turnaround was amazing, and they did an excellent job pivoting and staying flexible.
