The story behind the CSAM’s eLearning course
As a leading provider of asbestos awareness training in Manitoba, CSAM (Construction Safety Association of Manitoba) is trusted by construction industries and beyond to deliver quality training and resources to help keep workers and communities safe.
CSAM’s Asbestos Awareness course was initially developed and delivered as an in-person training program that was aligned with the provincial training program standard defined by SAFE Work Manitoba. While initially designed for the construction industry, the program’s relevance quickly expanded to other sectors and industries requiring workplace asbestos awareness. With limited training providers in this field, CSAM found itself catering to a broad audience seeking this essential training.
Recognizing the growing demand and the logistical challenges associated with in-person training, CSAM sought a solution to make its program more accessible. They choose to convert their in-person training into a flexible eLearning format to address this need. This approach would allow them to reach a wider audience while ensuring a consistent, accurate, and meaningful learning experience.
Neovation worked closely with CSAM and their subject matter experts to transform their existing training materials into a dynamic and engaging eLearning course that was compliant with the provincial training program standard. By integrating the core principles of asbestos safety with interactive and learner-focused design, we delivered a course that empowers participants to understand their responsibilities as they relate to asbestos awareness in the workplace—including what asbestos is, where it may be present, the associated health risks, and when to call in the experts.
Key highlights of CSAM’s training program
CSAM already had in-classroom training material with good information that met the SAFE Work Manitoba Training Standard for Asbestos Awareness. Unfortunately, the in-classroom format restricted the learner audience to only those who could attend in person.
Our approach to this eLearning project was to collaborate with their subject matter experts to capture all critical information and present it to their learners in a format that would allow a consistent and broad reach.
- Expert Collaboration: We partnered with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who deeply understand the accredited in-person training materials. Their insights were crucial in transforming existing content into an engaging eLearning experience.
- Instructional Planning: Neovation completed a curriculum plan for the new training approach. The eLearning course was designed to be concise yet comprehensive, ensuring the material is easy to digest and applicable across industries and roles.
- Quality Assurance in the LMS: Multiple quality assurance reviews for content accuracy and technical functionality were conducted within the client’s Learning Management System (LMS) platform, ensuring the course was fully prepared for a successful launch and offered a seamless learning experience for participants.
Optimized for Accuracy and Consistency: The training program promotes an accurate and consistent delivery of key concepts and resources to support asbestos awareness for individuals working in construction, maintenance, or any environment where asbestos might be present.
Working with Neovation’s Custom Learning team was a great experience. Their expertise, creativity, and commitment to quality were evident, and we appreciate the effort they put into making our project a success.
Project Goals
The goals for the instructor-led training to eLearning conversion project included:
- Expand Accessibility: Convert CSAM’s in-person asbestos awareness training into an eLearning format to make it accessible to a broader audience across multiple industries beyond just the construction sector.
- Ensure Compliance: Develop the eLearning course to align with the endorsed training standard established by SAFE Work Manitoba, maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the content.
- Engage Learners: Create an engaging, interactive, learner-focused eLearning experience that effectively communicates key asbestos awareness concepts and empowers participants to meet workplace safety responsibilities.
- Streamline Delivery: Leverage the client's Learning Management System (LMS) to ensure the course is technically functional, easy to navigate, and ready for a seamless launch—reducing barriers associated with in-person training logistics.
- Meet High Demand: Address the growing need for asbestos awareness training by providing a scalable and efficient solution accommodating learners from diverse industries and roles.
Unique Challenges
A unique challenge in the project was supporting the client while they worked with a third party to ensure their transformed course continued to meet the provincial training standard for asbestos awareness. Through the development and review of the eLearning project, we identified areas in the original in-person, instructor-led version that would’ve also impacted the new eLearning course.
To make these improvements, since the project was under contract, we leveraged a flexible and transparent project and scope management process to accommodate and ensure that the content met accreditation requirements.
The Final Result
The project's final result was a highly engaging, compelling eLearning course that transformed the client’s in-person asbestos awareness training into a reusable, consistent online format. The course adhered to provincial training standards set by SAFE Work Manitoba, ensuring compliance and credibility across industries.
The new eLearning course provides learners a seamless and meaningful learning experience by leveraging interactive design, practical examples, and user-friendly navigation. Hosted on the client’s LMS, the course successfully eliminated barriers associated with in-person training, allowing a broader audience to gain critical asbestos awareness knowledge. The project met the growing demand for this essential training and empowered learners to fulfill their workplace safety responsibilities confidently.
Since the course launched in January 2025, it has helped our client reach a much larger audience and meet the sector's demand, creating a meaningful and positive impact on people’s health and lives.
Working with Neovation’s Custom Learning team was a great experience. From start to finish, our project was organized and managed with clarity and transparency. We felt informed, supported, and confident throughout the process. The collaboration was smooth, and the team was thoughtful in bringing our vision to life. They took our course content and turned it into a meaningful and engaging learning experience that will benefit a wide range of industries across our province. Their expertise, creativity, and commitment to quality were evident, and we appreciate the effort they put into making our project a success.
