The story behind Sunwing’s eLearning workbook

The airline industry is highly regulated, requiring companies to meet stringent regulatory requirements with precision. Sunwing Airlines faced a specific requirement for a 50-page, 200-question workbook that needed to be completed as pre-classroom work. This process was cumbersome for both learners and administrators, who had to mark it and grade it manually. It was also expensive and labor-intensive, with the high printing and administrative costs of in-person training.

Sunwing realized they could meet their regulatory requirements in a much better way for both their students and instructors. Their goal was to transition to a digital format for the environment, cost-saving, and employee satisfaction. This is where Neovation Custom Learning stepped in to apply their expertise.

Neovation worked closely with Sunwing to transition its existing paper workbook to a digital format, transforming the way the workbook was completed. The workbook moved to a format that allowed automation, multimedia, and saved time for instructors and students, while also saving money for the organization in printing costs.

Neovation and the Sunwing team collaborated to digitize the paper-based workbook, ensuring the new version of the workbook met the specific requirements of the project. Specifically, the Neovation team assisted with:

  • Conversion of a 200-question workbook to digital: With the added complication of the entire workbook needing to be approved by government regulatory agencies.
  • Automated scoring: The paper-marked assessment that was manually reviewed now was replaced with automated scoring.
  • Increased compliance rate: The team needed to be 100% compliant and required all questions to be answered correctly.
  • Digital workbook effectiveness: Sunwing Airlines’ compliance rates skyrocketed to 100% when the complex paper workbook process was replaced with the digital workbook.

Project Goals

The primary goals were to decrease classroom-based workload, reduce paper usage for environmental and costs for processing the workbook, automate workbook grading, and increase both instructor and learner satisfaction.

Unique Challenges

A unique challenge of this project was developing a workbook in a digital format while ensuring that every question was answered correctly. The test taker only had to repeat the questions they got wrong, not the entire test, helping them increase their compliance rate and comprehension of the material.

The Final Result

Since 2020, the digital workbook has sustained positive outcomes with learners and instructors alike.

By eliminating the need for printers and printing the workbook, Sunwing Airlines saved over $3,000 and a lot of trees! The automated grading system reduced classroom time by at least one hour per session, leading to a 10% decrease in training time and higher employee morale. Instructors were happier, and trainees reported more positive experiences.

The digital format also impacted compliance, with improved training performance and reduced failure rates. Trainees were more prepared and appreciated the ability to complete tasks at their own pace while getting instant feedback from automated grading. Compliance rates soared to 100%, significantly improving knowledge retention, which was reflected in a reduction in failure rates for their final exam.
