About CAMRT
The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is the national professional association and certifying body for four medical radiation technology disciplines: radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, magnetic resonance and radiation therapy.
Medical radiation technologists provide the imaging and therapy that healthcare teams rely on for diagnosis and treatment.
Clinically sound content that could only be read
CAMRT develops self-directed distance education courses for continuing professional development. The courses were written by subject matter experts and peer-reviewed, and members received them as PDFs and textbooks. Online, that meant the same hard-copy content on a screen.
The courses had to sustain continuing competence in practice and improve how technologists work. Meeting that called for a significant reconstruction into an interactive online format, in both official languages, delivered through a SCORM-compliant LMS.
How the courses were rebuilt
-
Interactivity built for clinical content
Click-to-reveal diagrams, drag-and-drop activities, flashcards, image sliders, knowledge checks and case scenarios, with 50 to 100 layers per slide in Articulate Storyline.
-
One standard across many experts
A clear project plan, individual contact with each expert and shared templates kept every course consistent, even as courses were added during production.
-
Easier to manage
The new course design is easier for CAMRT to manage and update, and it helped CAMRT keep delivering its courses through the pandemic.

Project goals
- Rebuild existing courses in an interactive online format
- Sustain continuing competence in practice and improve work performance
- Deliver high-quality instructional and graphic design
-
Challenges
- Delivering through a SCORM-compliant LMS, with HTML5 interactivities
- Assessing learners in a variety of formats
- Keeping courses consistent across several subject matter experts with their own expectations
- Working with each expert individually, at different levels of familiarity with online delivery
- Supporting bilingual course content
The result
Design and development took two to three years because CAMRT added courses during production. Related images that the textbook had spread out are now grouped in sliders for a more intuitive learning experience, which CAMRT singled out as a highlight.
