About LGCA liquor certification

The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA) provides licensing, enforcement and regulation for the liquor, gaming and cannabis industries in the province. It promotes the responsible use of liquor, gaming and cannabis products.

A certification every liquor server in Manitoba needs

Everyone in Manitoba who serves, sells or delivers liquor, and the security staff and managers who work in licensed establishments, must complete a certification program. Smart Choices Liquor Service and Retail Certification is offered through the LGCA.

The training covers legal and safety obligations in liquor service and retail: checking ID, not serving intoxicated people, individual responsibilities under liquor laws, and safety and security risks at work. It also includes problem gambling awareness, since gambling is often offered where liquor is served, so the certification transfers easily across the hospitality industry.

What makes the program engaging

  • Eight redesigned courses

A modern design with video, music and audio effects replaced courses that had little interactivity.

  • Open to the public

Anyone can enroll and study at their own pace.

  • AI voices and avatars

Several AI voices and avatars guide learners through the content.

  • 360-degree environments

3D image-based environments with interactive branching scenarios let learners explore each setting.

  • Video-based scenarios

Videos show safety and security risks in an establishment and ask learners to choose the right course of action.

  • Practice before certification

Knowledge checks use true or false, multiple-choice and multi-select questions, and an automatically graded practice quiz ends each module to prepare learners for the final certification quiz.
