About Nissan Australia

Nissan Australia has been part of the global Nissan brand since 1972. It operates a car-parts manufacturing unit and more than 180 dealerships, with thousands of sales personnel and technicians.

New models and features that every role must know

Nissan Australia needed learners in different roles, from sales and service professionals to technicians, to master and retain the content for their own area of expertise while also learning the company's values and goals.

Technicians need detailed knowledge of how Nissan's smart vehicle technologies work, and sales staff need to understand them well enough to explain them to buyers. Conventional training alone was not enough for busy employees to retain this content over the long term.

Nissan Australia wanted training it could update quickly as new features emerged, that would measurably improve engagement and retention, and that gave mobile-first, on-demand access to short, focused content.

Why OttoLearn fit

  • Adaptive training

Content reaches each learner based on job role, progress and mastery, and Nissan especially liked the adaptive algorithm.

  • Reporting and tracking

Managers at all levels receive customized reports on learner engagement and progress toward mastery goals.

  • Multimedia content

Knowledge Cards and Activities, heavy on video and graphics, balance information with chances for learners to apply what they know.

  • Quick updates

New content can be updated and deployed right away to keep pace with new features, options packages and safety technology.

  • Easy to use

The mobile-first, intuitive interface and search were strong draws.

  • Built for retention

Spaced repetition and instructional scaffolding build mastery and long-term retention.

  • Project goals

    • Teach dealership owners and employees the company's values and the features of each vehicle
    • Achieve measurable engagement, mastery and retention
    • Update training quickly as new features emerge
    • Give learners mobile-first, on-demand access to short, focused content
  • Challenges

    • Thousands of learners in different roles, each needing their own content
    • Conventional training alone did not build long-term retention for busy employees
    • Automotive content that changes with every new feature, options package and safety technology

The result

In the first month after deployment, OttoLearn engaged nearly 4,000 Nissan Australia learners in more than 1,200 Activities, and learner numbers and content kept growing. The content is short, relevant and immediately useful, and one staff member reached mastery in just three days.

What Nissan Australia says

  • This is an amazing tool: we're getting employees to continually engage in learning to allow that retention. And it allows us to measure where the knowledge gaps are immediately.

We can then develop activities to cover any knowledge gaps. It also allows the principals of the dealerships to encourage their employees because now they will have a dashboard that demonstrates to them 'this person isn't proficient in the sales techniques' or 'isn't proficient in this particular product'.

Edward Trinh, National Manager for Dealer Training, Nissan Motor Co. (Australia)
