About OFATV
OFATV is a federation of volunteer-operated clubs in Ontario dedicated to safe, legal and sustainable trails across the province. Its staff and volunteers work closely with the provincial government and municipalities to champion the rights of ATV riders, and to show the public that its members are respectful, environmentally conscious outdoor enthusiasts.
Safety training for young riders across a large province
ATV riding is growing in popularity among young riders, and OFATV puts their safety first. Its safety training was delivered mainly in person to large groups, which is hard to access in a province as large as Ontario.
An online course could reach thousands of young riders, but the content had to suit learners aged 12 to 15 and make critical safety information stick. Neovation worked with OFATV and its partners to build RideON, a course set on a virtual trail that covers mechanical features, maintenance, accident prevention, safety and environmental considerations, and trail etiquette.
Key parts of the course
-
Six interactive modules
The modules cover safety, environmental stewardship, trail etiquette, riding skills and techniques, and ATV mechanics.
-
Trail badges
Learners earn a trail badge for each module they complete.
-
A simulated ride
The final activity is a simulated ATV ride down a virtual trail that brings together the skills learned.
-
Collaborative development
The OFATV teams, their stakeholders and Neovation's Custom Learning team worked closely throughout.

-
Project goals
- Provide interactive, engaging training for young people eager to start riding ATVs
- Make sure the training meets all legislative requirements in Ontario
-
Challenges
- Turning safety and legislative training into a course that holds the attention of 12- to 15-year-olds and stays with them after they finish
The result
The course is a two-hour, six-module program designed like a trail, so learners feel out in the field. Audio design adds realism, and hotspots, questions, drag-and-drop activities and badges keep learners involved.
The response to the course has been very positive. OFATV can now reach thousands of young people with critical safety information, on a scale it could not reach before.
