About UMN
The University of Minnesota is a large public research university with more than 65,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs across five campuses.
A required course that had to be accessible to everyone
Fundamentals of Disability Accommodations and Inclusive Course Design was created for University of Minnesota faculty and instructors. They must complete it once. Anyone else in the University community can take it too.
The course is self-paced and accessible, so learners can return to it at any time. It has three interactive modules of about 20 minutes each:
- Understanding disability and reasonable accommodations
- Providing reasonable accommodations
- Inclusive course design
How the team worked
-
A wide review community
The team worked with a community of 300 stakeholders and incorporated feedback from 60 individuals.
-
Accessibility from the start
Extensive accessibility requirements were part of the project from the start, and the team kept them in front through every revision.
-
A clearer storyboard process
The storyboard process was streamlined, with design elements that highlight accessibility notes during reviews.
-
Representation in visuals
Each of the hundreds of images in the course was reviewed for representation and met the University's expectations.
