How a custom learning project works
One team works with you from the first interview with your experts to the first upload to your LMS. You review the work at storyboard and again at build.
The steps
-
We gather the content
We start from what you have: slide decks, manuals, recordings and the expertise of long-tenured people. Plan on two or three sessions with your subject matter experts, 60 to 90 minutes each. Content that isn't ready is the normal starting point.
-
We storyboard and design
The storyboard sets out the content, script, interactions, activities, scenarios and quizzes, and the course design gives you several slide layouts on your brand. You review both: one major round and one minor round.
-
We build and test
We build on the approved storyboard and template, with custom graphics, animation, audio and accessibility features. Quality assurance checks design consistency, grammar, learner flow, completions, media, navigation, browsers and your LMS. You review the build: one major round and one minor round.
-
We launch and support it
We help with publish settings, can support the first upload to your LMS and we'll fix minor bugs for 30 days after your final approval. Every year we re-test the course in current browsers and re-publish it with the latest authoring software under our extended warranty program.
Who you work with
- A named project manager, your single point of contact.
- Instructional designers who review your content, interview your experts and write the storyboards.
- Digital designers who create and build on the custom design demo you approve.
- A quality assurance team who complete rigorous reviews.
Design levels
Every course is scoped at one of three design levels. The level should match what the content demands, and Level 2 is the one most often scoped.
| Level | What the course contains | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Clean, professional design focused on clarity: standard interactions, simple navigation, basic knowledge checks and stock visuals, built for rapid deployment. | Policy updates, simple compliance training and short awareness courses |
| Level 2 | Custom branding, multimedia, moderate interactivity, narration, custom animation, learner-driven exploration and basic branching. | Onboarding, process training, and software and systems training |
| Level 3 | Fully immersive: gamified learning, complex scenarios, simulations, custom graphics, advanced animation and interactions designed for your content. | Behavior change, leadership development, high-stakes safety training, and technical and equipment training |
Timeline and your time
-
From kickoff to launch
Six to twenty weeks for a custom course; multi-course programs take longer. We build the schedule backward from the date you need it, with milestones for both teams and a shared project tracker.
-
Your team's time
For a single course, usually 10 to 20 hours across the project: the expert sessions and the two reviews.
What you receive
- The finished course in the format your LMS needs, such as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI or cmi5.
- The source files, at no extra cost.
- Accessibility to WCAG AA, with the review log.
- Two review rounds at storyboard and two at build.
- A 30-day warranty on minor bugs after approval, and the yearly re-test and re-publish with our extended warranty subscription.
-
How we use AI
We use AI as the right hand of a human being who is responsible for the output. Everything is vetted by our experts.
-
Tools
We build in the authoring tool you use, most often Articulate Storyline or Rise, for delivery into whatever LMS you use.
FAQ
Our content isn't ready. Is that a problem?
That is the normal starting point. We analyze existing materials and hold structured sessions with your experts, then build from that.
What if the project changes halfway through?
Your budget buys production capacity, not a locked scope. If an animation turns into an interactive activity, or the slide count grows as the content firms up, the new plan comes out of the same budget.
Who will we work with day to day?
A named project manager, who is your single point of contact from kickoff to launch. Your experts work with our instructional designers on the content.
Can you finish a course we already started?
Often, yes, and it is usually cheaper than starting over.
Can you make our existing courses accessible?
Yes. We remediate your most-enrolled titles first, then build everything new to WCAG AA from the first storyboard.
Where are our project files kept?
In a cloud-hosted project directory. We sign an NDA on request.
How can we help with your custom eLearning?
Tell us what you're working on and we'll suggest where to start. We reply within three business hours.
